Midrand Knights Cricket Club celebrates success

MIDRAND – Midrand Knights Cricket Club beats Randburg Cricket Club in a SU6 fixture.

Midrand Knights Cricket Club’s 3rd team beat Randburg Cricket Club in a SU6 fixture in Midrand.

Chairperson for Midrand Knights Cricket Club, Jeremy Meiring said, “Needing to make up for a poor performance in our opening match, we were determined to make it three wins out of three for the club. We won the toss and elected to bat in home conditions that are very familiar to us.

“We lost captain Nick Chint in the very first over of the match. Somu Shekar came in at the crucial number three position, and resurrected the early scare, putting on a 50-run partnership with Shashi Merugala.”

He added that the duo saw off some hostile bowling from the Randburg quicks. “[Shekar and Merugala] took us from 4/1 to 68/2. Both Somu 27 (24 balls) and Shashi 24 (34), lost their wickets in a space of 10 balls. The Knights middle-lower order totally collapsed, and went from 67/1 to 170 all out.”

Keanan Chamier 20 (17 balls) and Prasad Vara 27 (19), added valuable contributions to the Knights’ cause.

Defending 171, opening bowlers Shekar 1/14 (6 overs) and Chamier 2/23 (6.3) bowled beautifully, with pace and aggression. Both took early wickets, putting Randburg under pressure at 23/2 after 10 overs.

Jerod Meiring then cleaned the middle order up with great pace bowling and control. He finished with figures of 3/36 (7) and was supported by Lohit Tripurana who ran through the lower order with his right arm off-spinners. He ended with 3/32 (5). Randburg was eventually bowled out for 161 in 32.3 overs with Knights winning by nine runs, securing their first-ever league win.

The Man of the Match award was shared by Meiring and Tripurana.
