The allure of polo

JOHANNESBURG – It's set to be a day of elegance and sophistication. Will you be there?

The Communications Firm (TCF) is a company which deals with public relations, events, branding, design and hospitality.

The company’s hospitality division, Allure, is hosting the BMW International Polo Series which is set to take place on 11 September at the Waterfall Polo Estate in Midrand.

Now in its second year, the polo series boasts a massive reach and is set to attract many more people than before, but organiser of the event and chief executive officer of TCF, Bonnke Shipalana, said the day was not intended so much to bring in the numbers as it is to create accessibility to something new and unexplored in South Africa.

“We looked around the country to see which activity will expose people to a new mindset; which activity we will be able to participate in and which activity can we [as South Africans] own in 10 or 20 years’ time,” said Shipalana. “Polo is one of the oldest sports in the world, but it’s still quite new to South Africans. You hardly see it on TV, so if we’re not exposed to it then how can we participate?”

In the spirit of exposure and participation, the company wants to get people more involved in the sport and teach the public about the things lesser known by laymen. “Not many people know that each player on the polo team requires about six horses in order to play one match,” he explained.

Don’t miss out on your chance to rub shoulders with South Africa’s most elite personalities at the BMW International Polo Series.
