A tournament for budding soccer stars

JOBURG - Solomon 'Stix' Morewa Tournament kicks off on 11 September.

The Solomon ‘Stix’ Morewa Tournament is a great platform for young talent to be discovered.

This is according to the founder and CEO of Clinix Health Group, Dr Khamane ‘Kop’ Matseke.

Outside his football passion, the late Morewa, who was the first and most colourful president of the South African Football Association (Safa) when it was readmitted into Fifa in 1992, was himself an employee of the healthcare group which is an affiliate of the tournament.

Matseke said the tournament, organised under the auspices of the Soweto Football Association (SFA) which is an affiliate of Safa, was initiated to honour a man he described as the ‘father of football’ in South Africa for his immense contribution to the beautiful game in this country.

“As the Clinix Healthcare Group, we’re proud to be associated with this tournament to open the door, not just for football players, but women footballers in particular. I would like to see this tournament grow from strength to strength and continue its phenomenal work in unearthing talented footballers of both genders,” Matseke said.

A proud SFA president, Phil Mogodi pointed out that Banyana star midfielder, Refiloe Jane, was a living testimony of the success of the tournament. “I believe she will serve to inspire other young girls looking at making a career in football,” Mogodi said.

“She has come a long way from this tournament many years ago and her exploits for Banyana Banyana will further be a feather in her cap to lure other teenage girls not to give up on their dreams.”

The three-month long tournament has more than 1 200 teams participating from 341 associations and is split into three divisions, the U11, U17 and the seniors, and is open to all SFA-affiliated teams.

Sixteen female football clubs will be participating in the tournament that kicks off on 11 September and runs until 12 November.
