Primary schools go head-to-head in sports day

SAGEWOOD – Primary school soccer, netball and chess teams went head to head in Midrand Primary School.

Midrand Primary School invited schools from all over Johannesburg to their grounds for their annual Winter Sports Day on 28 May.

The sports day displayed three disciplines comprising soccer, netball and chess. The organiser and the school’s sports co-ordinator, Kholani Zwane, who manned the announcement table, said he felt the competition between the schools improved. “Our children, who are mainly based in Midrand, a suburban area, are not as active as children from township schools.”

He added that although some of the children were from township schools, they play quality soccer. “They are so passionate about the game that they will find a way to play it anywhere, anytime, and with that, it shows in their skills,” he said.

Ephutheng Primary School in Alexandra also participated in the games. Thomas Mabasa, the head of the sports department at the school said, “We are happy our children get to compete with other schools like this, it improves their skills.”

Yeoville Community School sports co-ordinator, Herbert Mahlatji said the games will also foster new friendships. “Although the competition is tight between the schools, we also want to build lasting friendships.” He said that he wanted the games to serve as a means to an end for some of his pupils. “We are not all meant to be doctors. This is a way to put their skills to the test and to seriously consider making soccer a career,” Mahlatji said.
