Midrand resident takes on highest altitude canoe race

MIDRAND - Midstream resident, Theo Smit, recently partnered with James Thorburn from Pretoria to participate in the annual High Altitude Surfski Race at Emmarentia Dam.

In the race, competitors use motorboats to create waves to make an ocean-like surf environment. The duo enjoyed the event hosted by Dabulamanzi Canoe Club, finishing the 10km race in a time of 00:50:00, coming in 14th place out of 140 boats, and 2nd in the veteran age category.
Smit said, “The race was exciting as it was my fourth high altitude ski race. I have been a canoeist for the past 20 years and a surf ski competitor for 10 years.”
Despite depositing beach sand in the shallows where the dam water level was extremely low due to repairs on the dam wall, the surfski race was a great success.
