Who will be the ‘fall guy’ in the Nedbank Cup Soweto derby?

JOBURG - The million dollar question to be answered at the FNB Stadium on 5 March is: Will it be Kaizer Chiefs or will it be Orlando Pirates to bite the dust?

#OneTeamMustFall and fall it will come 5pm when the referee blows his final whistle and the million dollar question will have been answered in this clash of giants in the Nedbank Cup.

There will be no prize money for the correct answer but what we know for sure as soccer scribes is that one team will certainly fall, be it in the 90 minutes, extra time or a penalty shootout.

Pirates coach Eric Tinkler said he would have preferred to have met Chiefs later on in the competition, preferably in the semis though he did not give the reason why.

“Fate has given us them and we will have to live with it. I just hope we’re not the fall guy come Saturday afternoon,” said Tinkler, a former Bafana Bafana player in the 1996 African Cup of Nations conquering squad.

Tinkler’s Chiefs counterpart Steve Komphela was upbeat. “We’re ready for the duel and hope to emerge victorious as we don’t subscribe to the myth that it’s a derby and hence it will end up in a draw as has happened on numerous occasions,” he said.

“Each time we play, we aim for a favourable result, and a win is what will be on our minds on Saturday. We always aim for a win whether it’s a cup derby or ordinary derby,” Komphela admitted that he was spoiled for choice as all his players had raised their hands for this derby.

However, Komphela will be without central defender Lorenzo Gordinho after he picked up his fourth yellow card last week while the Buccaneers’ walking wounded are Oupa Manyisa and Thandani Ntshumayelo.
