Donation of a sporting kind

IVORY PARK - Nedbank, in association with The Sports Trust, an organisation which builds sports facilities and enhances education through sport, recently donated school uniforms, stationery, two mobile science laboratories worth more than R270 000, and a R1.2 million multipurpose sports court to Ivory Park Primary School.

Since 2013, Nedbank has donated three state-of-the-art multipurpose sports courts which accommodate five sporting codes, namely soccer, netball, basketball, volleyball and tennis.

Minister of Sport and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula, was at the handover event to officially open the multipurpose court. He addressed the pupils and told them about the value and importance of education, adding that hard work and discipline will advance them in life.

Group executive for group marketing communications and corporate affairs of Nedbank, Thulani Sibeko said, “Sport development and education are key focus areas at Nedbank as we believe that they are the keys to creating and nurturing a knowledge-based economy. The donation, which is also part of the bank’s back-to-school initiative, has provided more than 10 000 children across the country with uniforms and other basic school items to the value of R13.5 million.”

Executive director of The Sports Trust, Anita Matthews, said contributing to sports facilities in disadvantaged communities is one of the organisation’s key focus areas.

Matthews explained, “Together with Nedbank, our trustee and corporate donor, the multipurpose sports court provides the perfect solution to enhancing education through sport for our youth in South Africa, and we are proud to partner with Nedbank on these world-class facilities.”

Patience Maswanganye, principal of Ivory Park Primary School said, “As teachers, parents and pupils of Ivory Park Primary School, we are encouraged by Nedbank and The Sports Trust’s efforts to continue to make the things that really matter to communities happen and we appreciate the donation.”
