KES Old boys shine as Lions win thriller

JOBURG - King Edward VII School old boys Stephen Cook and Matthew McGillivary were in fine form for the bizhub Highveld Lions when they beat the Chevrolet Warriors by four runs in a thrilling encounter at the Wanderers.

The Warriors won the toss and elected to bowl first as the Momentum One Day Cup resumed after a long break due to the Sunfoil Series.

The Lions posted what looked like a below par score of 256 in 49 overs, on a pitch that did not offer much for the bowlers. Lions started their innings at a good pace and were 78/1 after 20 overs.

Cook continued his brilliant form and notched up his ninth limited overs century for the Lions. When Cook and Alviro Petersen were at the crease, the Lions looked in control of the game until Petersen was dismissed for a well-crafted innings of 37.

Despite Cook getting a well-deserved century, the Lions failed to up the tempo of their innings, but Nicky van de Bergh’s cameo of 45 runs was a huge boost in getting the home team over the 250 mark.

Warriors’ Sisanda Magala impressed with the ball as he bagged match figures of 5/43 in his 10 overs.

The visiting team’s run chase got off to a flying start with captain Colin Ingram and Colin Ackerman putting on a 61-run partnership for the second wicket.

Ingram blasted his way to his half century which included two towering sixes and five fours. At the 30 over mark, both teams were almost level, but a double-strike by McGillivray and Bjorn Fortuin shifted the momentum firmly to the home side.

Another former KES pupil, Carmi le Roux, making his debut for the Lions, was impressive with the ball as he grabbed two scalps.

The game went down to the wire with Warriors needing 10 runs off the final over, however, some tight bowling by McGillivary restricted the visitors to only four runs.

The victory sees the Lions move to second on the Momentum One Day Cup standings, and now trail log leaders, the Cape Cobras by four points.
