Trojan gets groomed for horse-care excellence

KYALAMI – Tasked with the responsibility of looking after horses’ everyday needs – it is only fitting that grooms get the necessary skills and qualifications to do their best, ensuring horse owners' peace of mind, that no matter what may happen to their horse – it is in good hands.

One step closer to doing just that, Trojan Maphosa has started climbing the ladder to being the best groom he can be. Maphosa recently passed his Sanip (South African National Instructors Plan) module 1 with a whopping 83 percent.

According to his employer and lecturer for the exams, Lynda Records, Sanip module 1 is the first stepping stone of the national exams which go through to the top coaching qualification (module 7) which is internationally recognised by the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI)

The exams are designed to give a fully recognised qualification in the equestrian industry. “Whether you want to be a head groom, a stable yard manager, an assistant instructor or a national coach, module 1 is where you start and progress to module 2, then 3, 4, and up depending on what you want to do in the industry,” Records said.

According to Records, it is an absolute necessity that all grooms get the opportunity from their employers to attend lectures and sit the Sanip exams. “Your trusted groom is left to look after your horses and by letting him or her attend lectures and sit the exams you are not only ensuring you have a competent, trained employee but you are also recognising that grooms play a key role in the equestrian industry,” she concluded.
