Kicking their dreams into gear

MIDRAND - Midrand Vichi Knights Football Club is a young club with big dreams.

The club was established in 2009 to meet the need for youth development in the community.

After six years of developing and having three teams playing in the North Rand Football Association (NRFA), the club held their first awards ceremony on 24 October this year.

“The idea behind the awards ceremony is to motivate the kids to participate in sport. Also, it was to showcase to their parents what their children are doing and how well they are performing,” said the club’s chairman Vishnu Chinniah.

U14 coach Basil Dickason said the evening was a success.

“To see the children relish in the victory of their successes and to hear and feel the excitement is quite amazing,” he added.

“It is our wish to see the club grow from strength to strength and put the Midrand community on the map.”

Speaking as a parent of two of the club’s players, Dickason said the management of the club was outstanding.

Although the club has limited resources they make do with the contributions they receive from parents, and their three sponsors, In4Group, CT Control Systems and Kapele Freight and Logistics.

“We would really appreciate more of the business community getting involved in the club in order to see this [wish become reality],” said Chinnia.

Halfway House Primary School has been accommodating the club and has opened their soccer fields for the club to practise on and for home games. “We would like to have a home of our own,” said Chinniah.

The club has three teams in the NRFA – U12, U14 and U15.

“Some players have been with us since they were six years old. They come from diverse backgrounds and through soccer they are learning about each other and the world,” said Chinniah.

The new soccer season will start in February. Parents of children between eight and 16 who are interested in joining the club, as well as companies and individuals willing to sponsor the growth of the club can contact the club’s head coach or chairman.
