Tokyo joins Fifa presidential race

JOBURG - South Africa's Tokyo Sexwale has joined the Fifa presidential race along with seven other candidates for elections scheduled for 26 February next year.

South Africa’s Tokyo Sexwale has joined the Fifa presidential race along with seven other candidates for elections scheduled for 26 February next year.

Fifa’s Ad-hoc Electoral Committee confirmed it has received seven names of candidates for the presidential election to take place at the extraordinary Fifa congress in Zurich, Switzerland.

The candidates proposed are His Royal Highness Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein, Musa Hassan Bility, Jérôme Champagne, Gianni Infantino, Michel Platini, His Excellence Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, and former South African Minister of Human Settlements, Sexwale.

Given that Platini is currently provisionally banned from taking part in any football-related activity, his candidature will not be processed by the Ad-hoc Electoral Committee as long as the ban is valid and in force. Should the ban be lifted or expire before the presidential election, the committee would decide on how to proceed.

The committee will now assess the candidatures in line with the Electoral Regulations for the Fifa Presidency, and the investigatory chamber of the independent Ethics Committee will carry out integrity checks as stipulated in the regulations.

The investigatory chamber will – as a result of this integrity check – deliver comprehensive documentation on each candidate, but it will not give a recommendation as to whether or not a candidate may run for the Fifa presidency.

Upon receipt of the results of the integrity checks, the committee will reconvene to review the submissions and validate their compliance with the applicable Fifa regulatory provisions.

Following this process, the committee will formally admit and declare the candidates who are eligible to stand for the office of Fifa president.
