Defending champions still on the hunt

JOBURG - Defending champions of the Telkom Knockout, SuperSport United are still in the hunt to retain their trophy.

After disposing of Polokwane City by two goals to one, Matsatsantsa A Pitori have been pitted against newcomers in the league, Lamontville Golden Arrows.

This fixture will be played at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on 24 October with kick off set for 8.15pm.

Gordon Igesund’s charges are again expected to emerge victorious from this encounter against a tricky and revitalised Arrows since the arrival of their new coach, Serame Letsoaka.

Arrows easily took care of the MTN champions, Ajax Cape Town who were still celebrating their famous win against Kaizer Chiefs.

As the big four guns, SuperSport, Orlando Pirates, Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns have so far avoided each other courtesy of the seeding arrangement, they might have to face each other in the semis.

Former cup kings, Amakhosi will visit high-riding Mpumalanga Black Aces, who are currently the pacesetters in the league. Muhsin Ertugral’s boys struggled in their last 16 encounter against Bloemfontein Celtic. It took penalty shootouts for them to dispose of Siwelele 3-2 after a goalles draw in two hours of play.

If they forget their striking boots at home this time around, they could easily be punished by the seemingly rejuvenated Chiefs after their clobbering at the hands of Ajax in the MTN final last month.

This clash will be played at the Mbombela Stadium at 6pm on 24 October. On 25 October, Free State Stars will be at home in Bethlehem against Sundowns at Goble Park Stadium at 3pm.

The last encounter of the quarterfinals will be played once the last 16 match between the Buccaneers and the University of Pretoria has been done and dusted. AmaTuks will meet the Buccaneers on 16 October.

The winner of that match will face Maritzburg United. If Pirates come through, they will be seeded in accordance with their top finish in last season’s Absa Premiership.

However, if AmaTuks overcome the Buccaneers, then Maritzburg will be the seeded team as they finished last season higher than AmaTuks.

This fixture will be played at either the Orlando Stadium, if Pirates come through, or at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg if the University of Pretoria make it through. Kick-off is at 3pm.
