Jaylin’s balancing act

MIDRAND - Jaylin Sewell is a young Midrand gymnastics protégé who has found the perfect balance between play and ambition.

At the age of three, Sewell’s parents discovered that their child was particularly limber and fearless. “His coach noticed that he could perform particular skills at a very young age,” said Tyron, Sewell’s father.

Speaking of his son’s international competition aspirations he said, “Jaylin wants to represent South Africa one day.”

Sewell is making great strides towards this goal and recently qualified to represent Gauteng at the Gym Games which will be held from 7 to 10 October. His father said the seven-year-old was determined to represent the province well. “He is looking forward to do his best at the games,” he said.

“At his age, he has qualified to represent Gauteng for class 1 high performance.

“We want to see him as a top gymnast in South Africa and for him to participate in international competitions.”

Sewell’s coach, Karabo Maidi from Centurion Gymnastics Centre, said he was pleased with the skill Sewell possessed. “He is a talented child, a hard worker and a good listener. These are characteristics you need to progress in sports these days.”

Maidi said Sewell’s work ethic would result in a pleasing performance from him, “He is training very hard and the preparations have been going well ahead of the Gym Games.”
