VIDEO: Mini Cricket back in full swing
INANDA - Decked in their red and white gear over 1100 kids took part in the Gauteng leg of the KFC Mini Cricket Festival held at St Davids Marist Inanda cricket grounds.
KFC Mini Cricket is back at full throttle with more than 1 100 children decked out in their red and white gear participating in the Gauteng leg of the KFC Mini Cricket Festival at St David’s Marist Inanda.
The KFC Mini Cricket programme gets children across the country involved in the game at an early age, and is considered a breeding ground for young cricket talent with 80 percent of the current Proteas players having gone through the system.
Participants at St David’s got to meet Stephen Cook and Pumelela Matshikwe of the Bizhub Highveld Lions, and South Africa U19 cricketers, Liam Smith of King Edward School, Brandon Glover of St Stithians College and Conor McKerr of St John’s College.
“This is a fantastic initiative,” said Lions skipper, Cook. “I remember 25 years ago I used to play in it and that was probably my first experience of the game.”
Cook said he was delighted to have been part of the programme. “I think one of the greatest gifts you can give a child is to give them hope, a dream and aspiration, and you will get the best out of them, and that is what this initiative is doing,” he said.
KFC has been a sponsor of the Mini Cricket programme since 2010 and will continue its sponsorship for the next 10 years.
