Wits rues missed chances (WATCH)

JOBURG - Wits University rued their missed chances in the opening game of Varsity Football as they failed to win the game in front of their enthusiastic crowd and shared the spoils with the victorius University of the Western Cape (UWC).

The stadium was packed to the rafters as students came in their numbers to support their teams throughout the game. Wits was the better of the two teams creating plenty of scoring opportunities.

The first half belonged to Wits as they put pressure on the UWC defence which looked shaky at times. Towards the end of the first half, Gift Baloyi provided a defence-splinting pass to Mahle Mtabane, but Jasen Marshall made a wonderful clearance to deny Mtabane.

The game went into the break with no score on the board as both sides fumbled in front of the goals.

The second half saw Wits pick up where they left off when captain Hope Munyai looked to inspire his team when he left two defenders on the ground, but released a tame shot which did not trouble keeper Reon October.

Lack of concentration at the back of the net nearly cost Wits the game, but Nhlanhla Manana of UWC failed to score with no keeper on the post, after a great cross from the left side.

Wits pressed hard in search of that all-important goal, but the UWC defence stood their ground and got away with a point.

Karabo Mogudi, the Wits coach, applauded the crowd for their enthusiasm throughout the game and promised that his boys will bounce back next week when they take on Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

Munyai of Wits was named man of the match for his wonderful display.

The tournament is said to provide a great platform for young players who want to make it into professional football, and many scouts will be on the lookout for new talent.
