Midrand canoeist takes on Klip River

MIDRAND — Midrand resident, John Greeff, an experienced paddler from the Centurion Canoe Club at Rietvlei Dam, partnered up with Roger Waters to take on the Klip River.

Despite hitting a rock at top speed in the wild water rapid, they managed to repair their boat sufficiently to finish the river race in a time of 02:54:00.

The Florida Lake Canoe Club hosted the 30km river race from Daleside near the R59 Heidelberg off-ramp, through Henley, and finishing in Meyerton on 12 July.

The race was part of the canoeists’ training programme and provided an opportunity for new paddlers to gain the experience needed for A Grade status in order to be able to compete in major national events such as the Fish River Marathon and the Dusi.

Avoiding rocky ledges and other obstacles created some treacherously difficult situations, however, the paddlers gained much experience and river knowledge.
