Cricket team in action

MIDRAND - Midrand Knights Cricket Club had two teams in action over the weekend.

The second team played in a SA7 fixture against Azad Swaraj in Lenasia.

The U13 team, which was sponsored by Midway Homes, travelled to Greenside to take on Pirates Cricket Club.

Both sides recorded comprehensive victories. They lost the toss and Pirates decided to bat first on a slow wicket. The Knights boys did exceptionally well, restricting the hosts to 95 runs for three wickets in 20 overs.

All the bowlers did really well. They bowled with great discipline, and conceded only 10 wides.

They chased the total down on a very slow wicket, making stroke play almost impossible.

Washington Nyanda, with 30 runs not out, was the mainstay of the innings and was well supported by Ajay Krishnamurti with 17 runs and Aryan Vijai with 19 runs.

They won by five wickets, off the last ball of the innings.

The second team won the toss and chose to bat first on another slow track in Lenasia, against a dangerous Azad Swaraj Cricket Club.

Dependable openers Pavan Donthineni and Vijay Kumar started the innings and played well by batting well within themselves, and with great discipline. With the score on 31, in the ninth over, Kumar was dismissed for 15.

Raja Bingi joined Donthineni at the crease at number three, and tried to move the score by playing a little more aggressive. The nature of the pitch didn’t allow for that and he was dismissed for 15.

At drinks, the score was 56 runs for two wickets in 18 overs. The Knights were dismissed for 180 in 33.3 overs, with the lower middle order contributing with some valuable cameos at the end.

Azad Swaraj needed 181 in 35 overs to win.

The Knights’ captain, Suman Choudary, brought himself on at first change, and immediately made an impact by taking the first Azad Swaraj wicket. Naveen Pothineni, who took one wicket at the cost of 22 in seven overs, bowled exceptionally well from the other end. Both kept a very tight line and length, building great pressure in the process.

Regular wickets fell, with Naresh Borra taking two for 19 runs in five overs and Vinesh Reddy taking two wickets for 26 runs in seven overs.

The opposition could only muster 140 runs for seven wickets in 35 overs.

Knights won by 40 runs.
