Soccer spirit soars

MIDRAND - While the Fifa World Cup is the highlight of the moment for soccer fans, on 28 June the football field in Mayibuye township was the centre of the Midrand community's attention.

Mayibuye and Klipfontein Football Association hosted the first leg of the football tournament, sponsored by Fair Price.

Teams from Ivory Park, Ebony Park, Kaalfontein, Rabie Ridge, Olievenhoutbosch, Klipfontein, Mayibuye and Phomolong competed.

Chairperson of the association, Mike Tshipu said the matches on 28 and 29 June served as knock-out rounds, and the final round would take place at Rabie Ridge on 20 July. He was excited that Fair Price was sponsoring the prizes.

“The winning team will receive a floating trophy, soccer jerseys and R5 000 prize money. The second-placed winners will receive R3 000. The two best players in each team will receive beds and mattresses too,” said Tshipu.

Not only soccer but entertainment was on show during the first leg, and in the finals there will be a host of entertainment for the community.

While soccer will be the main focus, drama shows will entertain. There will also be a beauty contest and a draw for community members to win a plasma screen TV, a music system and a bed and mattress in both competitions.
