Fat Cats on the run

MIDRAND - Fat Cats Football Club, founded in Midrand in 2003, is expanding its sports offerings.

Now runners will be able to join the athletics branch of the club, which was launched last week.

While runners from all over Johannesburg can join the club, Midrand residents will benefit as training days will be hosted in Midrand, according to chairperson of the athletics club Isaac Teka.

He explained the club would operate as a virtual club to create a home for running enthusiasts around the province, irrespective of their location.

“There’s a healthy appetite for athletics in this province, particularly road running. We not only have a high number of active runners and walkers, but plenty more who run or jog around their neighbourhoods to maintain some level of fitness. The latter group seldom belong to any running club, for various reasons, including that they cannot find a club that fits in with their lifestyle,” said Teka.

The club is registered with Central Gauteng Athletics.

Teka said the launch of the club was a dream-in-the-making for a long time.

Amos Mananyetso, co-founder of Fat Cats added, “It has been a long journey, and we are very excited to arrive at this point in the history of Fat Cats. The running club fulfils a very important ambition for us, as we’ve long wanted to create a platform that brings together families and friends to socialise and compete with like minded athletes, while maintaining a healthy lifestyle.”
