From properties to burning rubber

KYALAMI - Century Property Developments, a residential developer, is known in the Midrand and Kyalami area for its Waterfall Estate and Blue Hills Equestrian Estate, among others.

Now the CEO of the company, Mark Corbett will participate in the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge on 5 April, with the Century Racing team.

According to the Century, the aim of the race is to gain desert experience in preparation for Dakar 2015.

Corbett said, “We are driving a seven-litre car called the CR5 built from scratch by the Century Racing team in our workshops north of Johannesburg. A combination of years of research and development has been used to produce the ultimate two-wheel drive Rally raid vehicle.”

The CR5 makes use of the latest technologies and custom-made components designed and made in-house specifically for this car. The Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge is the first in a series of international FIA races and Century Racing has its sights set on a strong finish in the 2015 Dakar rally.

Corbett previously raced the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge in 2006 and won the prologue, beating the best factory teams including the eventual winner, Luc Alphand. He consistently finished in the top 10 and was lying in seventh place on the second last day when he was unfortunately involved in an accident which put the team out of the race.

“This time we have covered all our bases and of course I have the benefit of more years of experience,” he said.

The Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge is a five-day motor sport spectacular being staged across Abu Dhabi emirate under the auspices of the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority with the Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE in an organisational role. It is considered to be one of the world’s most prestigious international cross-country rallies. During the Challenge, competitors face two days of documentation and scrutiny before a super special stage which decides the starting order. Competitors then brave the Liwa Desert and the Moreeb area of the Empty Quarter for five days.
