Creating turbulences with 100 surf-ski’s on the dam, it was a mighty hard to keep up with battle of the bunches around the buoys. Grant Thiel from Midrand with partner Brian Whillier were among the many who enjoyed watching the star studded field as they participated in the exciting enjoyable event, finishing in 1h.10 minutes as the 54th double.
The race of this magnitude carried massive prize monies and sponsorships therefore it attracted world renowned champions in this sporting event. The World and South African Marathon Champion Hank McGregor who won the event and Oscar Chalupsky winner of every major surf-ski race in the world, except the high altitude one in Johannesburg, were some of the professionals who participated.
Olympic bronze medal winner Bridgette Hartley partnered with multiple Dusi winner, Andy Birkett to chase for second place in the doubles category. The local canoe club in the Emmarentia Dam, Dabulamanzi, has applied for Guiness book of records recognition for being the largest inland surf-ski race with the highest altitude.
