Tributes pour in for late canoeist

EMMARENTIA - Family members of the late canoeist Bill van der Walt said they have been humbled by the messages of condolences received from people across the country.

Tributes have been pouring in since Van der Walt passed away on 9 May.

Van der Walt was a member of Dabulamanzi Canoe Club and was a coach and club manager for many years.

Under his mentorship his two sons achieved gold medal status at international World Champion events and at provincial level.

Club public relations officer Jennie Dallas said, “With great sadness we take leave of a giant in SA paddling. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Michelle, Grant and Brandon. Bill van der Walt was to his core a tireless servant of Dabulamanzi Canoe Club, Gauteng and SA paddling. The hole that is left by his passing will not be filled easily.”

On 16 May canoeists will hold a memorial service at Emmarentia Dam’s canoe club to pay their last respects.

Dallas said, “A memorial service, flowers on the water, and a lap of honour will kick off at 5.30pm in his memory with a few words from the family.”

Donations from mourners will be benefit the Dabulamanzi Development Fund.

Dallas said, “The Van der Walt family have been were deeply humbled by the outpouring of love and support from the people who knew him.”
