Tornado shatters lives

MIDRAND – Resident urges communities to remember the poor.

The recent bad weather was a harsh reminder of the housing problems faced by many people in our country.

The tornado that ripped through Tembisa took with it people’s vehicles, tore the roof off Phumulani Mall and, [worst] of all, without much effort, it destroyed some shacks which a lot of people, unfortunately, call home. While some seemed to enjoy the change in weather, I was reminded of the fact that some people do not have warm clothing, blankets or houses that can withstand a tornado.

Providing dignified homes for poor people in South Africa is key. Many children who are brought up in child-headed homes are found in many of the shacks; poverty is a daily experience for them.

If you are fortunate and have money, food and blankets to spare, remember to give.

Always live aware that not everyone has life’s comforts.

What we take for granted may be someone else’s lifeline. As long as one of us is in need, we cannot celebrate seeing a tornado – its presence should make us sad as that force of nature can tear lives apart forever.
