Let’s make a difference in Joburg

JOBURG - There are two big charitable days coming up – let's make sure charities get the most out of them.

Christmas for charities

Mandela Day is around the corner and charities and non-profit organisations are counting down the days as if they are counting down to Christmas.

This is the one day many charitable organisations get the help they need. It is sad that most of us only do something special once a year – but I guess once a year is better than nothing.

There is a slight buzz in the air as many corporates start finalising their plans for 18 July. In just under seven weeks time, businessmen and women from across Joburg will emerge from their buildings to clean up major intersections, volunteer at an animal shelter or paint a wall at an orphanage.

Some argue that every day should be Mandela Day, while others argue that the day has become superficial and commercialised. Be that as it may, the fact is that charities still benefit – and no one can really argue with that.

Much the same can be said about the CEO SleepOut which is nine weeks away. When the event took place last year, scepticism was rife with many, including myself, questioning the motives of those taking part. When you look at the good that came out of the night, the lives that were changed with the money raised, it is hard to argue against the initiative.

These are two great causes with organisations behind them that truly do want to make a difference. To the businesses in Joburg, big and small, I urge you to take part in both these special days.

Our youths have such big hearts so, to the schools – let’s see what our leaders of tomorrow can accomplish by letting them shine on Mandela Day and the School SleepOut, associated with the CEO SleepOut.

Get registered, make a difference and let’s change Joburg one day at a time.
