Speed limit drop in Kyalami questioned

Carol Shoobert writes:

Instead of doing something about crime, the authorities put up a sign.

In the past it was ‘Hijacking Hot Spot’ or in this case ’60’. Dropping the speed limit on this stretch of road (Kyalami’s Main Road], will do absolutely nothing to stop the accidents.

Drivers jumping red traffic lights and having total disregard for the law are the reasons for the accidents. I personally had to stop suddenly while joining Main Road from Maple Road, with the traffic light in my favour because a vehicle travelling along Main Road made no attempt to slow down, let alone stop.

This is nothing more than a cash cow as long as the authorities man the speed trap, which is usually only done during the day and at peak times, and not during the accident-ridden nights.

I would be interested to know the real accident statistics, as in the number of accidents, the time of day, speed and reasons for each accident that warrant the speed limit decrease by the City and Provincial Task Team… Or was it easier to change a few signs than to do a thorough investigation?
