The IIE’s Varsity College Waterfall hosted the final round of the Annual National High Schools Quiz on October 14, where South Africa’s eight brightest learners competed.
Michael Brown, a Grace College KwaZulu-Natal Grade 10 learner, outshone the rest and won the quiz with an incredible performance.
He received a well-earned R10 000 in cash, while his school also walked away with R10 000, and his coach was rewarded with R5000.
Michael’s victory was no surprise, given his exceptional knowledge of geography, history, science and nature, sport, entertainment, and current affairs.
“What a brilliant quiz; the final round was by far the most challenging. I am very excited about the R10 000 I have won and am planning to invest a bit of the money and then the rest I will use to spoil myself,” said Michael.
“I appreciate the fact that my dad, who supported me all the way, was able to join me at the final round. I encourage all Grade 9-11 learners to partake in the National High Schools’ Quiz next year as it is way more fun and competitive than you think it would be.”
Mia Rothuysen, a Reddam House Durbanville Grade 10 learner, came second, receiving a cash prize of R6000, while her school received a cash prize of R3000. Her coach also got R3000.
Lehlogonolo Chukudu, a St Catherine’s School Grade 11 learner, came third, receiving a cash prize of R3000, while her school received a cash prize of R1500. Her coach got R1500.
Avadhi Ghela, the campus head, said that Varsity College Waterfall was honoured to host the final of the National High Schools Quiz 2023.
“The learners were confident and motivated to do their best despite the pressure, and it was a successful morning of fun spent with high performers who have a bright future ahead of them.”
