Blue Hills College alumna shares her educational journey

Her path was softly paved by the morals and ideals provided not only by the school experience but also by the spiritual experience.

Blue Hills College alumni Refilwe Seleka writes:

Growing up, I was aware of my future in the legal field. However, no success tale is without an incident, so here is mine.

I am the firstborn of three children my parents were blessed with. This placed me in a leadership position to set an example for my siblings.

My journey began in 2003 at Lichtenburg Primary School in the North West. By nature, I am humble, disciplined, and hardworking.

As a result, academically I did my best in primary and also participated in public speaking, which I believe helped me find my voice.

My high school years began in 2010 at Blue Hills College – my home away from home – an institution I am still grateful for for shaping and moulding me.

My path was softly paved by the morals and ideals provided, not only by the school experience but also by the spiritual experience.

As much as I grew and evolved academically, my spiritual development was adequately supported.

Personally, those were the most memorable high school years and I would do it all over again if I could.

After high school in 2015, I was accepted to study Bachelor of Law at the University of the Free State.

Now one thing I would like to emphasise is that the transition from high school to a higher institution is challenging.

This is especially so if you attended a Christian boarding school like I did. I was introduced to a completely different way of life, and I had to learn self-control, patience, and alertness at all times.

Despite this, I adjusted well and found my footing until everything changed in 2017. I lost my focus, forgot my goal, and blindly walked down paths I was unfamiliar with. As a result, I fell pregnant due to my rash behaviour.

I call it ‘The Great Disappointment’. The embarrassment I caused to my family is what tore me apart but at the same time has been my driving force since then.

They had high hopes for me and I shamefully returned home pregnant. Nonetheless, I thank God for my mother’s unimaginable strength because she did everything possible to push me.

Her constant words of encouragement during my predicament sparked the fire I once had in me.

I then promised myself that once I was back on my feet, my objective would be to complete what I had started.

With a few challenges, in 2019 I returned to university, this time to North-West University.

I worked diligently and meticulously to succeed in all my academics. Yet, balancing studies, a child, and social life was not smooth, but it was those spheres of my life that kept me disciplined.

Finally, in 2022, I completed my LLB degree and am now a Bachelor of Law Honours Degree graduate.

Currently, I am a candidate attorney at Morweng Attorneys in North West, Mahikeng.

Moreover, my intention is to further my studies by doing my LLM in public law and legal philosophy next year.

The best things in life do not come easy. If there is something you really want, fight for it, do not give up no matter how hopeless it seems.

Most importantly, involve God in everything — Psalm 46:10.
