Kyalami Preparatory School celebrates Africa Month in style

Through a series of fun activities, learners and their families tested their knowledge of the continent.

A series of activities themed around Africa was held at Kyalami Preparatory School for this year’s Africa Month.

Africa Month is celebrated in May every year to mark the African Union.

It was through these activities that the prep school learners and their families were able to test their knowledge of the continent.

Learners in the various sports houses – Eagles, Falcons, and Hawks – competed to see which house could most accurately label blank maps of the continent.

They identified the locations of landmarks and cultural products and answered general knowledge questions themed around Africa’s history and culture.

A series of activities themed around Africa was held at Kyalami Preparatory School to celebrate this year’s Africa Month.

Families also participated in a virtual quiz to help the children earn house points.
Grade 7 learner Katrina Chau said it was gratifying to use her general knowledge in these activities.

“We studied this in social sciences and it felt like I was studying something for a purpose,” she said. “I realised that I knew more than I thought. It was fun.”

Katrina is also a member of the school’s inter-school general knowledge team, which participates in termly general knowledge quizzes competing against other schools in the area.

The school’s media specialist Siphiliselwe Makhanya said they were fortunate to be a diverse school.

“Africa Month is a great chance for us to look at ourselves as a continent with the same awe we have for other places in the world. It was fun to highlight some of the fascinating aspects of our wonderfully complex heritage,” said Makhanya.

School media assistant Mmahuma Mojela, who helped coordinate the activities, said the learners’ task of labelling the map was her favourite part.

“This is because children learn from each other. So even the younger children learned from our older ones about our different countries and cultures. I loved that parents also took part as well to encourage our children to be proud of being Africans,” Mojela concluded.
