Learners spent the day reading to their friends, enjoying some delicious 'bookworms' and listening to their teachers read aloud.

For 13 years, World Read Aloud Day has called attention to the importance of sharing stories by challenging participants to grab a book, find an audience, and read aloud.

On February 1, classrooms around the world took time to celebrate and honour the power of reading and sharing stories and expand the scope of global literacy.

Carlswald House Preparatory School was honoured to have renowned author Refiloe Moahloli read one of her most famous books, How many ways can you say hello? and sign a few copies.

“We exchanged the many ways to say hello in South Africa and beyond… how we show care and respect, in recognising ourselves and another. Molweni, Dumelang, Avuxeni,” said Moahloli.

Moahloli said it was a joy to celebrate World Read Aloud Day at the school, interacting with the learners with hugs.

“At the end of the reading, pieces of paper emerged from children’s pockets… pieces were shared just so I could autograph them in the moment with their name, and a ‘hello’ of choice.”
