Acts House of Education learner excels in Wits University Mathematics competition

The competition is extremely difficult as candidates are not permitted to use calculators.

Taskin Govender, a Grade 9 learner at Acts House of Education excelled in the Wits University Mathematics competition in terms two and three this year.

This competition was started by Wits in 2018 for Gauteng schools, and in 2019 most of the schools in South Africa were included.

By 2020, despite Covid, the competition had spread to most schools on the African continent.

This was the first time Acts House participated in the competition and Taskin made the school proud with her outstanding results.

Out of the 7 000 candidates, only 100 candidates qualified in the first round of the competition. Taskin took part in the junior secondary category and placed seventh in Gauteng and in the top 10 in Africa.

The Wits mathematics competition is extremely difficult because candidates are not permitted to use calculators, only manual calculations are permitted — hands and brain.

Taskin also qualified in her age category in round two of the competition, and on November 17 during an online ceremony, she was acknowledged for her mathematical achievements.

Taskin was praised by the school and dubbed the math genius of the school, and Acts House math educators were appreciated for their hard work in teaching learners to excel.
