Oceans Private Schools hosts leadership workshop for local school learners

Three organisations are transforming the youth in Midrand, creating a pipeline for capable future leaders by providing leadership training at an early age.

Property.co.za Premier, one of the leading real estate companies in South Africa, in partnership with The John Maxwell Leadership Team has teamed up with Oceans Private Schools to host Global Youth Initiative events at the school and around South Africa. The initiative is changing mindsets among teens through leadership workshops and is already gaining momentum around the country with more schools signing up.

Oceans Schools recently hosted its first leadership workshop last month with John Maxwell Team coach and Midrand area property consultant Henry Moyo as the facilitator.

The desire to bring back discipline and reduce idleness among the youth has motivated Moyo, an expert in leadership to participate in this initiative. “A leader is a person who has the ability and personality to influence the action of others to ensure that his followers subscribe to the requirements of the institution, organisation, or group. Learners can learn effective leadership qualities, just like adults,” said Moyo.

“Many years of research on leadership have revealed that, given proper training in leadership principles, individuals can become effective leaders. Schools are fertile grounds for identifying and nurturing good leadership that can impact communities and the nation at large.”

The school principal, Themba Mhlafuna is grateful to the companies for sponsoring the event which was attended by 150 learners from schools around Midrand. “We believe that students who attend the workshops have benefited from a lot of these soft skills, and they have sharpened their leadership skills as well as polished their public speaking skills,” said Mhlafuna.

“The spirit of service inculcated in school prefects can be extended to the public domain. But the apathy to public service in the country is shocking. This can be reversed if schools can mold leaders, and this is what Oceans Private School and other schools have started doing.”

After the workshop learners as well as accompanying teachers from different schools requested more of these workshops and Oceans Schools plans to organise more of them and extend them to the community and find more companies to partner with to make a difference in the community.
