Water is scarce, but there is water – JW spokesperson

Johannesburg Water spokesperson said the demand gets higher than supply, especially during the higher temperature months.

“It is incorrect to say that there is no water in the city.”
This was said by Johannesburg Water (JW) spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala at a public meeting at the Midrand Fire Station on September 19.

Shabalala was responding to a statement by JW Midrand depot manager Akani Shibambu [reported in The City got no water – JW, [Week ending 4 October] in which Shibambu said the city did not have water.
“Indeed, water is a scarce resource in the country, an issue not only affecting the City of Johannesburg, but other municipalities as well. JW is managing scarcity because demand is higher than supply, especially currently during the higher temperature months. During the night, when demand is lower, we usually make a recovery,” said Shabalala.
She said, however, the water is quickly depleted during the day when the demand is higher.

“Johannesburg Water is continuously making efforts to improve and upgrade water infrastructure. For example, there is the ongoing Erand Tower project to boost storage capacity for the tower zone, which will improve water supply. Planned future projects include the construction of three new reservoirs – Carlswald Reservoir, Blue Hills Tower, and Halfway House Reservoir.”
