Local councillor calls for an urgent and comprehensive investigation into Jukskei River pollution sources

"I believe that a complete and impartial investigation is the only way to ensure the protection of our river," Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe.

Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe has expressed concern regarding the ongoing investigation into the sources of pollution affecting the Jukskei River.

Following the discovery of dead fish in the Waterfall area of the river, Deppe requested an urgent site visit to inspect the state of the notoriously polluted river.

The site visit was by the councillor, Arno Botham from Waterfall Country Village maintenance and facilities manager, and the Environmental and Infrastructure Service Department on August 8.

It was found that a sewage spillage into the river had resulted in a shortage of oxygen and the death of hundreds of fish. It also made it difficult for other water mammals to survive.

Deppe said while she acknowledged the identification of one contaminant source by Johannesburg Water (JW), she urged the investigating authorities to rigorously broaden their focus. The water utility appointed an independent contractor to remedy the sewage spillage and rehabilitate the river.

“They [authorities] must pursue a thorough examination to determine whether other sources are contributing to the pollution problem in the Jukskei River. It is vital for the welfare of our communities and the preservation of our environment that no potential source of contamination is overlooked. The immediate health and long-term sustainability of our river ecosystem must remain a top priority,” said Deppe.
She added all relevant departments needed to expand the scope of an investigation to include all possible sources of pollution into the river.
“Engage with independent environmental experts to validate the investigation process and provide regular updates to the public on the progress of the investigation. I will continue to advocate for comprehensive measures to safeguard our natural resources and hold the responsible entities accountable. I believe that a complete and impartial investigation is the only way to ensure the protection of our river and the health of our citizens.”

JW’s communication department was contacted to find out about the report.
