In preparation for the big day, learners created their ID cards, adding a personal touch to the simulation. The voting queues buzzed excitedly as learners lined up, eager to vote for their favourite candidate.

Contenders for the coveted position of Summerhill president were Gary the Galjoen, Sibusisio the Springbok, and Bella the Blue Crane.

The school event coordinator Mariska Willers said learners first verified that they were registered voters before proceeding to the voting booths.

“After casting their ballots, each learner’s left thumb was marked with ink, a traditional practice in South Africa’s elections to prevent multiple voting,” Willers explained.

“The mock election was a fun event and an invaluable hands-on learning opportunity. Learners gained a deeper understanding of the democratic process, from voter registration to ballot casting and the importance of fair play in elections.
