Cash-in-transit heist foiled by law enforcement’s swift response

Five arrested for potential cash-in-transit heist at local shopping centre.

A local shopping centre recently witnessed a potentially devastating cash-in-transit heist which was fortunately foiled by the swift and coordinated response of law enforcement.

The authorities successfully managed to arrest five suspects believed to be involved in the attempted robbery, preventing what could have been a harrowing ordeal for shoppers and staff alike on May 2.

A statement released by Gauteng’s Department of Community Safety states that law enforcement officers received a tip-off regarding suspects who were planning to carry out a robbery at a shopping centre in Midrand.

Responding promptly to the call, officers arrived at the scene just as the suspects were preparing to carry out their audacious plan.

“A team consisting of the police, CIT team, TRT, Anti-Gang unit, GTP_Traffstats Airwing, wardens, Midrand police, Fidelity, and Tracker Connect managed to spot the suspects’ vehicles with false registration plates, and the team managed to apprehend all five occupants from the vehicle,” stated the department.

During the search of the vehicle, unlicensed firearms and ammunition were found along with other exhibits.

It is alleged that one of the cars, a blue Nissan Hardbody, was used as the getaway vehicle by the suspects in another heist at another local shopping centre.

“Further investigation discovered that the same suspects and vehicle had committed a pavement robbery at another shopping mall in Midrand where a G4S was robbed, and suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of money.”

The apprehended suspects were promptly taken into custody for further questioning, and their identities have not been disclosed yet.

Further investigation is currently underway to link suspects to CIT-related robberies and other crimes, and the authorities are doing everything in their power to ensure the safety and security of the community.

Comment was requested from Captain Jeff Phora, the district police spokesperson, and Brigadier Molefi David Tsotsotso, the Midrand Police Station Commander, to confirm the allegations and obtain information about the suspects’ court appearance.

Despite multiple attempts, no confirmation had been received by the time of going to print.
