Seven suspects arrested for possession of stolen property and bribery in Midrand and Hillbrow

All the suspects will appear at their respective magistrates court soon.

Seven men between the ages of 26 and 40 were arrested by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Operations officers for possession of stolen property and bribery in Midrand and Hillbrow.

On August 15 officers stopped a vehicle with four occupants that was driving facing oncoming traffic on Allan Road in Olifantsfontein.

The officers searched the vehicle and discovered that the occupants were in possession of suspected stolen goods including a handbag, a wallet, bank cards, a driving license, and cellphones that they could not explain.

Money and cards were also recovered from the suspects.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said the men were questioned and they admitted that they rob patrons at various places of entertainment of their personal belongings.

“They further alluded that they sell the stolen goods to a shop owner in Hillbrow,” said Fihla.

“The suspects attempted to offer the officers a bribe and led them to a shop at the corner of Klein and Pretorious Streets in Hillbrow where they found their buyer who was in possession of cellphones without any receipts.”

Fihla said the shop owner recognised the suspects, and he admitted that they have been doing business together.

He was also arrested and detained by Hillbrow police. The officers seized all suspected stolen property from his shop and booked them in at the police station as well.

Fihla added that whilst detaining the four suspects at Midrand police, the officers were approached by two men who offered them an R600 bribe for the release of the suspects.

“Both men were arrested for attempting to bribe the officers and all the suspects will appear at the respective magistrate’s courts soon,” Fihla concluded.
