E-hailing vehicles removed at the Gautrain station as they were causing an obstruction on a public road

JMPD spokesperson Xolani FIhla said e-hailing drivers found operating on public roads and sideways will be issued a fine.

After the first security meeting held by Region A Citizen Relationship Unit Management and Region A officials to improve law enforcements in Midrand, JMPD recently received complaints about illegal parking of e-hailing vehicles.

The meeting held by officials in May was to help improve law enforcement around Midrand. This came after Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe noticed an increase in vehicles occupying public spaces as well as bus stops.

E-hailing vehicles were recently removed by JMPD as they occupied one lane at the Gautrain Station intersection (Pretoria Main Road and Dale Road) causing traffic jams during peak hours.

To help resolve this issue, JRA is set to introduce signage around the Midrand areas being occupied by e-hailing drivers. These signs will clearly indicate zones where e-hailing vehicles are not permitted to wait for passengers.

JMPD Spokesperson Xolani Fihla said the vehicles were removed as they were not complying with traffic regulations, which prohibit the occupation of public spaces for extended periods.

He further stated that the practice not only disrupts traffic but also poses safety risks to pedestrians and other drivers.

JRA spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers said they will erect signage on public roads as per the South African Road Traffic Safety Management Association.
The implementation of clear signage and continued enforcement efforts will ensure that public space around the area is not occupied by e-hailing vehicles. This is expected to improve traffic conditions and benefit commuters and road users.

As part of fulfilling the JMPD traffic management mandate and enforcing road regulations, JMPD removed the vehicles, and motorists are urged to adhere to traffic laws and regulations at all times.
