The Vorna Valley clean-up organisers urge men to join on Father’s Day

Ria Human urges more men to join the initiative when it's held on June 18.

The Vorna Valley clean-up initiative, which is held once a month, saw concerned residents get their hands dirty.

They were picking up litter on various streets around the suburb on May 21.

Albertyn and Anton Hartmann streets were cleaned including Harry Gualan Road.

The aim is to ensure that they keep their area clean, and this will be an ongoing monthly initiative. Ria Human, a Vorna Valley resident who started the initiative, said it is unfortunate that residents have to get involved in clearing their streets of litter.

“The number of people who take part every month varies but there are the regulars and for them, we are most grateful. Polystyrene containers, and the plastic in which they are wrapped, litter the streets as well as bottles both plastic and glass. These are the main items that contribute to the mess that our suburb is in,” said Human.

Ashley Barnes, a Vorna Valley resident and a regular participant in the clean-up.

The next clean-up is scheduled for Father’s Day on June 18.

She heaped praise on Ashley Barnes, a long-standing resident and a regular participant in the clean-up, for constantly being involved in the initiative.

“We are encouraging fathers and their children to give up an hour of their time on this special day to assist in the beautification of our suburb,” added Human.
Modiri Keebine, who was participating in the cleaning for the first time with his son, Itumeleng, said the initiative was imperative.

“Community members need to support this initiative because litter is not good. I think putting more focus on awareness about combatting littering is also important,” said Keebine.

Human said for a long time the Vorna Valley Residents Association employed a regular cleaner and it is hoped that soon they will be in a position to appoint another one.
