The IIE’s Varsity College Waterfall celebrates 100 years of women in law

The campaign is an initiative aimed at creating awareness that reflects the diversity of the part played by women lawyers in many fields since their first admission as lawyers 100 years ago.

April 2023 marked 100 years since women were first admitted to the legal profession in South Africa.

The IIE’s Varsity College Waterfall supported the 100-plus Years of Women in Law campaign by celebrating Kamogelo Semukunyeng-Mokone, a third-year Bachelor of Commerce in Law student who passed all her modules with distinctions.

The campaign is an initiative aimed at creating awareness that reflects the diversity of the part played by women lawyers in many fields since their first admission as lawyers 100 years ago.

Mokone strives to be the best in her class and wants to excel in the legal profession especially in the field of South African taxation because of her love of helping people.

“I am a young woman venturing into the field of law. I believe this field chose me as, growing up, I always wanted to work in the legal profession. My love for helping people just added to my motivation to study law at The IIE’s Varsity College Waterfall,” said Mokone.

“I am currently doing a research project about black South African women in law which is teaching me that I am privileged and lucky to be enrolled to study law as a female. We have women like Desiree Finca and Constance Mary Hall, and all the women who fought for their place in the legal space.”

Mokone said it was important to celebrate the 100-plus Years of Women in Law as it was not easy for women to get into the field.

“I still believe women are so deserving of the legal field because behind all the successes is a hardworking, determined, independent, and strong woman. All the challenges women face in the world do not stop them from pursuing their dreams and that makes me proud to be a woman in general. The future is female, I am the future.”

The IIE’s Varsity College Waterfall School of Law hopes that gaining an understanding of the past will inspire future generations of lawyers to strive for equality within both academia and the legal profession.
