Midrand crew runner Tumeka Zaula shares her journey as a runner

Midrand crew member aim to achieve the Bill Rowen medal in 2023

Despite having no experience or the correct running shoes, Midrand Crew running club member Tumeka Zaula preserved and recently achieved a personal best.

Zaula (36) started running in 2019 and kept this a secret. “I did not even tell my older sister Funeka who was already advanced in running, I did not want the pressure,” she said.

Zaula participated in her first half marathon, the Soweto Marathon, in that same year. “My second race was 32km. It was tough but I managed to finish in 03:52:00. I had no proper shoes or supplements. I had injuries caused by incorrect running shoes and my training ways.”

And her perseverance paid off recently when the club awarded Zaula with a Personal Best (PB) medal. “PB is a motivator to wake up for those early morning training sessions. I feel happy and motivated. I am ready to start my next goal which is being part of the Comrades Marathon.”

In preparation for the Comrades, she completed the Two Oceans Marathon in 2022 and ran a 56km race in 05:30:00.

This year, Zaula hopes to achieve a time of 03:39:00 in a marathon which will give her a seeding for the Comrades and a better chance to attain a Bill Rowen medal.
