A successful unconventional career day

The unconventional career series held by Reddam House Waterfall was a great success.

Learners, parents, teachers, and visitors were exposed to the most fascinating careers – including flavourist, ethical hacker, colourist, cave explorer, and video game developer – on March 11.
Extraordinary speakers shared their stories and experience leaving attendees inspired and well-equipped with information about these careers.

The speakers included Minenhle Khoza, Kyle Stroebel, Dr Natasha Karenyi, Mahlangabezi Mdutyana, Nomsa Ngoma, Dr Keneiloe Molopyane, Warren Dawson, and Khumo Moerane.

The career day gave attendees with different interests the option to attend the topic of their choice as it took place in three venues at the school simultaneously.

Stroebel, a motion picture colourist who is part of the South African Netflix drama Blood and Water, and also a Grammy winner, said not many people pursue such careers because they are unclear about where to begin. In his remarks, Stroebel, as a colourist, said he splits his time between short-form commercial projects and long-form narrative films and brings an eye for detail to any piece.

With over 15 years of experience, he has been able to curate a unique style suited to contemporary filmmaking.

According to flavourist Khoza, flavourists are responsible for developing, improving, and modifying food products’ flavours. “They play a big part in how food tastes, and how to maximise flavour to appeal to a large consumer base,” said Khoza.

This successful event was a unique opportunity for attendees to learn from successful individuals who have pursued their passion and built rewarding careers in non-traditional fields.
