Grade 12 learners from Christ Church Preparatory School and College excel at the National Eisteddfod

The trio won the regional category and also won the ambassador award which is given to the winner of a category at the national level.

Despite final exams looming, these learners’ achievement at Christ Church Preparatory School and College remains outstanding.

Aliyah Bennett, Makungu Chabalala, and Jennifer Baillie entered as the school’s Grade 12 trio in the National Eisteddfod in the category of Musical Theatre — song and dance, with an item called ‘therapy’.

This piece combined two mediums – acting by Makungu and Aliyah and live musical theatre by Makungu and Jennifer.

It was a complex and very technical piece that involves juxtaposing the video segments into the live performance with very precise timing and quite technical live signing.

The trio won the regional category and also won the ambassador award which is given to the winner of a category at the national level.

This means being in the top 3% of all performers in the National Eisteddfod which has around 500 000 participants.

This was a fantastic result for the school, and it looks forward to seeing what the future holds for each learner.

Earlier this year, the trio entered the Thea Gafin Arts and Culture Fest ’22, in association with the National Children’s Theatre. They performed at the Joburg Theatre and achieved an A+ symbol for an outstanding musical performance which displayed completely different acting styles and singing.

“To say the school is very proud of their achievement is an understatement. Aliyah, Makungu, and Jennifer took on this challenge and exceeded everyone’s expectations,” the school concluded.
