Chairperson Sector 3 advises community on cybercrime

Sector 3 Crime Forum chairperson Marvin Maphiri says they expect an increase in cybercrime as the festive fever is fast-approaching.

Midrand’s Sector 3 Crime Forum believes there is a dire need for CCTV cameras to try to combat crime activities in the area.

This was said by forum chairperson Marvin Maphiri during a meeting on November 26, held at the Noordwyk Secondary School.

The two-hour meeting was attended by about 20 local residents. Maphiri said they have noted an increase in cybercrime in their sector, which services suburbs like Blue Hills, Country View, Crowthorne, Erand Midridge and Noordwyk.

“[There] is an increase in cybercrimes and a need for CCTV. With the festive season loading cybercrimes will gain momentum.

“Contributions from the general community [to install cameras] are low, while business contributions are non-existent. Our local business has apathy and their approach put their employees’ lives at risk, insurance companies should double the premium until they wake up,” said Maphiri.Z

He said the installation of CCTV cameras in hotspots area was a necessity and a matter of urgency if they are to win the crime battle.

Talking about plans to have some entrance and exists of their sector closed, through a petition, there was progress from where they started but he believes they can still do better as a community.

Maphiri urged the community to make their voices heard by signing the petition. “All residents of Noordwyk are eligible to sign, however, the sector is refining community engagement strategy, especially for estate residents,” added Maphiri.

“Our community participates mostly via WhatsApp or whenever they encounter problems. It has been our wish that physical meetings should attract more attendees since crime affects all of us and fighting strategies initiatives rest on all of us.”

He said the sector they were still far from a crime-free area and that lack of participation or rather collaboration of all community members exposes all residents.

In October, Maphiri said they were ‘under siege’ from crime perpetrators who continued to wreak havoc.

This is after their September crime statistics indicated a 150% increase in hijackings while common robbery had increased by 73.3% compared to the same month last year.
