Sector 3 September crime stats skyrocket

A spike in hijackings, common robberies, and muggings has caused is worrying for the Sector 3 Crime Forum.

Criminal activity in Noordwyk and the surrounding suburbs paint a bleak picture as the Sector 3 Crime Forum records an increase in car hijackings, common robbery and muggings.

Forum chairperson Marvin Maphiri said as the community, they were ‘under siege’ from the perpetrators who continue wreaking havoc in the sector.

As such, the forum hosted an awareness campaign on October 26, at the San Ridge Shopping Centre from 08:00 to 12:00, to find new ways of curbing this alarmingly high crime wave.

He said that compared to September last year, car hijackings in September this year have more than doubled while common robbery increased by a whopping 73.3%.

“In fact, car hijackings have increased by 150% during the month of September this year compared to the same month last year. And this is a very big concern for each community member and businesses in our sector need to be extra careful because it tells us that we are under siege,” said Maphiri.

He urged residents to not only be active when crime affects them directly because that cannot be the solution for combating crime in the area.

Maphiri further requested community members to participate in patrolling day and night in order to win against the scourge of crime.

He said the increase indicates a need for the installation of CCTV cameras on hotspots as a necessity if they are to win the battle against crime.

In March, the sector saw car hijackings and property-related crimes plunge by 27%. Cable theft, especially copper, was on the rise. However, contact crimes had decreased by 15.5% while trio crimes had also dropped by 42%.

“Mostly, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays it’s when most motorists are either being hijacked or have their vehicles stolen. House robberies occur frequently on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays between 16:00 and 20:00 in the evening”.

Maphiri said Tuesdays between 04:00 and 08:00 was the most affected day when it comes to criminal activities.

Earlier in October, the forum held a self-defence class for women with On Point Protection Skills after seeing an increase in women becoming victims of muggings.
