Off-duty JMPD officer shot after intervening in a domestic violence incident in Midrand

The officer was overpowered by the male who disarmed him of his private firearm and shot him.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) wishes Officer Levonne Jonas from the By-Laws Management Unit a speedy recovery after he was shot assisting a woman who was being assaulted by her boyfriend at the N1 South Olifantsfontein Road onramp in Midrand.

It is alleged that on December 4, Officer Jonas had stopped after witnessing a man assaulting a woman at the N1 South Olifantsfontein Road onramp.

It is believed that Officer Jonas introduced himself as a policeman and attempted to intervene and stop the assault.

JMPD spokesperson, Superintendent Xolani Fihla said Jonas was then overpowered by the man who took the officer’s gun and then shot him with it.

“The male immediately drove away leaving his girlfriend and the officer lying on the ground,” Fihla explained.

“Officer Jonas was immediately rushed to hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds to the left arm, and right leg and one round grazing his head. He is currently in a stable condition.”

JMPD officers responded to the incident and whilst on scene the assaulted female returned together with members of Midrand police, and she explained the whole ordeal.

Officers later received information that the boyfriend in question was at the Tembisa Police Station.

The officers proceeded to the police station where they found the man who was immediately arrested and taken back to Midrand police where he was detained and charged with assault GBH and attempted murder.
