Johannesburg Library and The IIE’s Varsity College Waterfall hosts more than 60 students for a Digital Literacy Masterclass

This initiative proactively equips students with digital skills, enhancing the institution’s role in creating a tech-savvy workforce.

A Digital Literacy Masterclass addressing the evolving demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) was recently attended by over 60 students from The IIE’s Varsity College Waterfall.

Hosted by the campus’ Information Centre and the City of Johannesburg Library, the event was part of an engaging Information Centre Week designed to equip students with essential digital and technical skills for academic success.

Students received training in Microsoft Word and Excel, while library representatives provided insights into the eLearning system and highlighted opportunities for free certified courses. They also offered guidance on utilising internships and leadership roles to gain practical experience for career enhancement.

Vilkelwa Sontsi, a second-year Bachelor of Arts student, said she learnt so much about Excel and the importance of it in the workplace.

“The information shared assisted me with basic knowledge that I can apply in the workplace, and I will be able to use it during my studies. I now know how to compile a report list in Excel and there is still much more to learn. I am grateful to have learned the basics of Microsoft Excel.”

The masterclass highlighted Varsity College’s commitment to integrating technology into its curriculum, bridging the digital divide, and preparing students for the workforce.

Plans for an annual Digital Literacy Masterclass are underway, reflecting the campus’s dedication to enhancing educational offerings in line with technological advancements. This initiative proactively equips students with essential digital skills, reinforcing the institution’s role in developing a tech-savvy and adaptable future workforce.

The Information Centre Week focused on ethics in AI, emphasizing integrity policy and language editing, as well as introducing AI tools for learning and an AI-based scavenger hunt as part of a broader AI initiative.
