Video: Fire rips through Midrand residential complex, residents evacuated

Emergency services searched 130 apartments to ensure all residents were evacuated.

Residents woke to an inferno around midnight at Broadwalk Urban Village complex on September 24.

According to the City of Johannesburg’s EMS spokesperson Xolile Khumalo, all residents were evacuated safely after a room-to-room search.

After the 130-apartment search, no fatalities have been reported, and the fire’s cause will be investigated once firefighting operations are completed.

Khumalo confirmed the complex’s owner will provide accommodation to all residents affected.

“EMS continues to urge residents of Johannesburg to scrutinise accommodation facilities before taking residency and please ensure that all electrical appliances are switched off after use,” said Khumalo.
