Noordwyk learner excels in provincial maths competition, finishing 4th out of 200 000 participants
The young learner from Midland Primary and High School says he was told by his teachers a day before the competition commenced.
Tshepiso Gololo, a Grade 5 learner from Midland Primary and High School said he felt good about finishing fourth in the Mathematics Olympiad.
Organised by the Department of Basic Education, 200 000 learners participated in the provincial maths competition. Tshepiso’s fourth place earned him a medal and a certificate.

The 11-year-old said he knew he was good with numbers and problem-solving but did not expect to achieve this feat against thousands of equally competitive peers.
“I was selected because I think I am good at maths. And when the opportunity came, two teachers came to my class and told me that the competition would be the following day. I was shocked about it but ready to compete,” said Tshepiso.

Principal Sharira Padayachy said Tshepiso’s achievement was remarkable given the number of participants.
“We are immensely proud of Tshepiso’s dedication and hard work. This achievement reflects our commitment to fostering a love for learning and nurturing young talent. Congratulations, Tshepiso, on this incredible accomplishment,” said Padayachy.
Tshepiso hopes to become an information technology specialist like his father.
