Excitement continues to build for the Midrand Shotokan Karate Third Gold Tournament

With champions like shihan Skio leading the way, participants are not just engaging in a sport; they are becoming part of a legacy that values strength, discipline, and unity.

With only weeks remaining until the Midrand Shotokan Karate (MSK) Third Gold Tournament on September 7 at the Olifantsfontein Community Centre, excitement is building.

Karatekas from the region are preparing to showcase their skills and dedication. Among the distinguished participants will be shihan Luca ‘Skio’ Tau, a karate legend with more than four decades of experience.

Skio began his karate journey in 1978 and holds a seventh dan black belt, exemplifying his spirit of perseverance in karate.

Karate legend Luca ‘Skio’ Tau.

He has competed in numerous local and international championships, making his mark at prestigious events such as the International Zurkhaneh Sport Cup in Turkey and Bangladesh.

MSK head instructor Dalson Seanego praised Skio, saying, “The man’s CV will take a year and a half to write and several books to complete,” emphasising Skio’s significant contributions to karate in South Africa.

As a co-founder of SA Karate Legends, Skio is dedicated to uniting karate across disadvantaged areas, ensuring the sport reaches as many young people as possible.

His daily classes reflect his passion and commitment to nurturing the next generation of karatekas.

This tournament is more than just a competition, it serves as a platform for opportunity and growth, attracting competitors from Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, and as far as Rustenburg and Mafikeng.

While the competition will be intense, the focus will be on learning rather than just winning. The registration deadline is approaching, with entries closing on August 25, allowing athletes time to prepare for their divisions and ensuring an exciting tournament day.

“Participants are eager to gain invaluable experience as they head toward regional and provincial trials later this year and early next year,” added Seanego.

MSK has also partnered with various Sector Education and Training Authority organisations to ensure the event contributes meaningfully to the participants’ career choices.
