Totsgames Gymnastics hosts gymnastics classes for local children

Totsgames Gymnastics is dedicated to nurturing young talent and creating a foundation for lifelong fitness.

What inspired the local sports enthusiast and dedicated fitness coach Nelson Midzi to initiate gymnastics programmes in the Midrand community was his strong desire to keep children physically active.

He aims to provide an engaging and stimulating environment that encourages young individuals to develop a lasting interest in sports or other physical activities.

By introducing gymnastics, Midzi believes that children can discover a passion for movement that can lead to a lifelong commitment to fitness and health.

“Gymnastics is both fascinating and challenging to children, effectively capturing their attention from an early age and allowing them to explore and utilise their innate talents,” he explained.

Through his fitness organisation, Totsgames Gymnastics, he hosted a series of gymnastics classes for children aged between three to 12 years at Poplar Academy on August 10.

The event attracted a vibrant group of young gymnasts who enthusiastically warmed up with a routine that included cardiovascular exercises. This was followed by essential pre-stretching exercises, setting the stage for an array of gymnastics activities that were both fun and educational.

The facilities included balance beams, vaults, bars, trampolines, and a tumbling track, providing ample opportunities for floor exercises such as cartwheels, handstands, and handsprings.

“Teaching gymnastics is incredibly enjoyable, especially when the coach is patient enough to guide students through the various stages of skill progression. It brings me immense joy to witness my students achieving the goals we set for them in such a short period.”

Midzi’s coaching philosophy is built on the idea of breaking down complex gymnastics skills into smaller, more manageable steps, making it easier for children to grasp the fundamentals.

He firmly believes that the earlier children begin participating in gymnastics, the greater their chances of mastering the sport and excelling in it as they grow.

When it comes to safety, Midzi prioritises it above all else. “Learning gymnastics involves falling many times before a skill is mastered, so ensuring safety is an absolute requirement.”

The gymnastics classes, held every Saturday, not only prepare children for gymnastics but also equip them with essential skills for any other sport they may wish to pursue in the future.

At the end of each session, the warm-down routine includes stretching and conditioning exercises that focus on building strength and enhancing overall physical fitness.
